Stephen Deas was born and brought up in the far south of The Shire. He studied Theoretical Magic at the Unseen University, specialising in his final year in Secrets Man Was Not Meant To Know and How To Mess With The Underlying Fabric Of Reality, both of which are subjects he has continued to pursue with enthusiasm ever since. After graduation, Stephen gleefully pursued the family hobby of pyromancy, successfully making a career of explosively setting fire to things in several different countries around the world.

Stephen has a god-complex and routinely creates entire new worlds, largely for the fun of watching other people smash them up again afterwards. Following a series of magical-summoning accidents, Stephen now lives near a swamp with an ever-growing number of chaos elementals (some with four legs, some with two) and a minor figure from Greek mythology. He has declared war on the forces Entropy on several occasions. Thus far, Entropy has largely failed to notice.

Rumours that Stephen was held hostage by a crack gang of quantum physicists during the construction of the Large Hadron Collider are unfounded.

the "Adamantine Palace" was publihed by Gollancz in March 2009 with the sequel, "The King of the Crags", due dor release in April 2010. Stephen's first Young Adult novel, "The Thief-taker's Apprentice" is also schedule for release later in 2010.
